1:19 PM Stop your Dog from Jumping on People |
Your dog’s happiness is often displayed when he jumps on you when you get home. Although this may be a homecoming you are looking forward to after a long busy day, there are times when jumping on you or other people can become annoying. Dirty paw prints may soil your office attire or that of your guests; or your dog may knock you off or somebody else in his excitement. One of the effective solutions to dog jumping is to train him to heed to the “sit” command using positive reinforcement. Make sure to teach him to sit in different settings and occasions. A treat or two comes in handy when you arrive home. As your dog runs out to greet you, show him the treat to get his attention. Command him to “sit” while holding his favorite treat. As he sits, give him a treat and show him another one to keep him seated. Crouch down to his level and give him the other treat, and say hello. You should do all these while rubbing his belly or patting him on the back. If he tries to jump on you, don’t push him away with your hands since he will take it as an invitation to play. Just ignore him by looking at another direction or even trying to walk away. Asking assistance from your Indianapolis veterinary clinic will also go a long way in addressing any behavior problem.
