10:05 AM Running into Other Dogs While Walking Your Dog |
Your daily walks are great for both you and your dog. They provide time for exercise, socialization and bonding. However, walks are not fun if there is confrontation with another dog. Work on obedience commands such as sit and stay with your dog so you can get control of him quickly if needed. Size up any dogs you run into as well as your own dog’s attitude. Either dog can be the aggressor or they may get along fine. Observe the dogs’ body language and watch how the dog owner behaves too. If the owner is posturing as if their dog may attack, trust that they know their dog and respond accordingly. Don’t reinforce your dog’s aggressive behavior either. It’s your responsibility to decide whether the dogs will meet or just pass on by. Insist on the level of contact that makes you comfortable from situation to situation.
