2:18 AM Respiratory Problems in Rats |
Mycoplasma pulmonis is a bacterium that most rats carry, although it doesn’t usually present with symptoms. However, in some cases, it can cause respiratory problems for your pet rat. Prevention is always the best way to avoid illness in the first place. When choosing bedding for your little rodent, make sure you choose a high-quality bedding with little to no dust. Fleece bedding and aspen shavings are both good choices. Some pet parents use paper, just make sure you don’t use newspaper, as the ink can cause problems for your rat when it gets wet. If your rat is struggling with respiratory problems, he may sneeze and sniffle. In more severe cases, he might become extremely lethargic and get staining around his eyes and nose.
