5:53 AM Pet Birds and Cuttlebones |
Have you ever wondered what those whitish objects in bird enclosures are? These are actually cuttlebones. While they are from the bodies of cuttlefish, they are not bones. They are the internal shell of the cuttlefish, which functions to help maintain their buoyancy. These are the white disc-like objects that you commonly see in many pet stores. However, not all birds show interest in cuttlebones. But those that are fond of cuttlebones spend a great deal of their time polishing their beak against the cuttlebone. Pulling at a cuttlebone will also exert friction on the bird’s beak, thereby removing little scaly flakes from the beak. Cuttlebones placed inside enclosures enrich the birds’ immediate environment, providing the inhabitants with adequate physical and mental stimulation. Also, these are viable sources of calcium. Consult your Villa Rica Area, GA veterinarian for advice, especially if you notice any distinct changes in your pet's health and behavior. |
