Orphan Kitten Care – Feeding And Elimination

Kittens that are under 4 weeks old will still need to be fed with a bottle. There are milk bottles specially designed for kittens that you can get at a pet supply store. While you’re there, get some kitten milk replacer because cow’s milk should never be given to kittens.

Kittens need to be fed every 2-3 hours when they’re less than a week old. Feedings can be done every 3 hours when they’re on their second to their 3rd week. At 4 weeks old, formula can be given every 4 hours. It is also during this time that the weaning process is started by offering some solid foods with the milk formula.

Kittens can be very prone to health issues because their immune system is still developing. So before feeding them, make sure that the nipple and bottle have been sterilized. Warm the formula and position the kitten correctly to avoid aspiration, that is, milk goes to the respiratory system instead of the stomach. Don’t place the kitten on his back or raise his head when feeding; the best way to do it is to keep the kitten’s head straight with all of the paws down, just like when he’s nursing from his mother. Avoid holding the kitten in the air while feeding him, and don’t force the formula into his mouth.

After the kitten has eaten, hold him in an upright position and very gently rub and pat the back. This will facilitate burping. Since there is no mother cat, you will have to assume the duty of stimulating the kittens to urinate and defecate after every feeding. They are unable to eliminate on their own until they’re about 3-4 weeks of age. Moisten a cotton ball with warm water and rub their genitals gently until they urinate and/or defecate.
