Is Your Pet Rabbit Overweight ?

Rabbits love to munch on hay, fruits, vegetables, and pellets.  However, do you have any idea how much your bunny should be getting of each? Here are some tips to keep your bunny from piling on extra pounds:

Rabbits are herbivores. Their diet should be composed of at least 80-85% hay because they need to chew on fiber to keep their teeth well-trimmed; dietary fiber also promotes digestive function.
Some rabbit owners choose to place their pets on a pellet diet because it’s more convenient, but this type of diet is known to be one of the surest ways to an obese rabbit. Pellets should be used sparingly because they are formulated to meet the growing needs of meat rabbits.

Aside from hay and pellets, rabbits should also have fresh leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, beet tops, kale, and collards. Fruits, like carrots are your rabbit’s version of sweet treats.
