Is your pet bird 'down in the dumps'?

Pet birds can also suffer from depression; in fact, the condition is much more common than many bird owners might think.

There are many factors that have been found to cause depression in pet birds including boredom, a change in the position or location of its cage, or even the loss of a favorite toy.

Depressed birds usually have fluffed-up feathers, poor appetite, and a change in droppings; they may also engage in feather plucking and are prone to irritable behavior.

A bird showing any of these signs should be brought to a veterinarian for checkup and diagnosis. However, if your pet is given a clean bill of health, your bird may actually be suffering from depression.

In order to address the problem, you need to find the underlying cause that is triggering your pet’s behavior. Examine your pet’s cage and living area, including the cage position. Birds like to stay in an area where the family usually congregates. Your bird will also need adequate regular physical and mental stimulation.

Keep your pet healthy and active by bringing him regularly to a veterinary clinic Markham.
