How To Get Your Cat's Vital Signs

Knowing how to get your pet’s vital signs is very important for it may spell the difference between a life and death situation. The vital signs include the animal’s pulse or heartbeat, respiratory rate, and body temperature.

Getting the heartbeat

Let your kitty lie down on his right side and light touch the spot where the left elbow touches the chest. This is where you can feel the cat’s heartbeat. The normal heart rate of a cat ranges from 160-220 beats per minute. The pulse can be felt by touching the cat’s inner thigh he is laying on his side. Gently lift the cat’s upper hind limb away from the lower limb.

Getting the body temperature

The normal body temperature of cats ranges from 100°F and 102.5°F. Use a thermometer to take your pet’s temperature.

The normal breathing rate of cats should be between 20 and 30 breaths per minute.

You can also ask your Oshawa, ON veterinarian to show you how to assess your pet’s vital signs on your next visit. Or make an appointment today!
