Even with their small sizes, gerbils need a spacious enclosure so they will have plenty of space to dig, chew, jump, and explore. Fish tanks are much preferred over wire cages and plastic enclosures because the solid glass walls can protect gerbils from potential predators and kids, while preventing their escape. Placing a layer of bedding inside the enclosure can give gerbils plenty of places to dig and burrow around. Place the enclosure near a window because gerbils are diurnal animals, they need to have a day and night cycles. But make sure to keep the tank out of direct sunlight. The solid sides of the tank will also keep the litter in so you won’t have any problems dealing with soiling around the cage.
