Helping Your Guinea Pig Live a Long Life

Guinea pigs are relatively healthy pets and can be expected to live six to eight years. Some pigs have even live to be 14 years old. Here are a few suggestions to help your guinea pig live a long life. Feed your pig a high-quality, nutritionally complete diet consisting of guinea pig pellets, fresh vegetables and fruits plus a generous supply of timothy hay. Keep fresh, clean water available for your guinea pig at all times. Remove uneaten food, stools and wet shavings from your guinea pig’s cage daily and completely clean the cage weekly. Keep your pig’s cage out of direct sunlight and away from drafts. Guinea pigs are highly social so keep the cage where family members pass by regularly. However, make sure there is some privacy so your pig can rest. Most importantly, examine your pig for signs of injury or illness and contact your animal hospital Brookfield WI for evaluation and treatment as needed.
