Most Syrian hamsters are known for their large cheek like pouches that are often packed with food at all times of the day. Some Syrian hamsters are even known for their love to burrow and love to sleep. However, the Syrian hamster is not known to bite. Sadly, many rumors have spread giving some people the impression that hamsters are dangerous and bite often. This is simply not true. Your vet can tell you that Syrian hamsters may bite occasionally, but it usually out of fear not habit. Some animals, in general, will bite in a defensive behavior when they are provoked or mistreated. Hamsters are no different.
