Hamster Cages

There are three general types of cages for pet hamsters—wire cages, glass cages, and plastic cages. The best enclosure for hamsters should have a solid floor and not one made of wire mesh for this can injure your pet’s feet. The cage should be at least 19 x 19 square inches, with a height of 6 inches.

Wire Cages

This type of enclosure has the advantage of having its residents use the wire for climbing, a natural hamster behavior. To avoid your pet from escaping, the spacing of the horizontal bars should be about ½ to ¾ inch between bars. Ideally, it should have a base that is detachable for easy cleaning and disinfection.

Glass Cages

This your ordinary fish tank; although they can easily be cleaned, glass tanks have poor ventilation and don’t have climbing areas for physical stimulation.

Plastic Cages

There are plastic cages available commercially designed with multiple tunnels and toys. These cages are generally the hardest to clean, and ventilation is less than satisfactory.
