Epilepsy in Sapphire Gerbils

Did you know that epilepsy can occur in animals as well as people? In general, epilepsy is a disorder of the brain or nervous system that can cause animals to have sudden, uncontrollable seizures. These seizures are most often recurring and may or may not cause the animal to pass out. Epilepsy can occur for unknown reasons or because of genetic abnormalities. In most cases Sapphire Gerbils are able to recover without any lasting effects from the seizure. The seizures tend to occur in Sapphire Gerbils that are suffering from stress, improper handling, or even a sudden change in living environment. In some cases the seizures are genetic and are referred to as idiopathic epilepsy. If you notice your Sapphire Gerbil behaving abnormally such as having fits, convulsions, or involuntary body movements call your vet. Your gerbil may require immediate treatment from your veterinarian Greensboro, NC.
