Diabetes is a condition where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin to manage blood sugar or the insulin is not used efficiently. This condition can occur in cats and more commonly in obese cats so it is best to keep your cat slim. Diabetes symptoms include both increased thirst and urination which can lead to weight loss, vomiting, lethargy and if untreated, death. Thus if your cat exhibits these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. Blood and urine tests can be used to diagnosis diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes but it is a manageable condition. Diet can control some cases of diabetes but many cats require regular insulin injections. You will need to return for additional testing to check blood sugar levels. Pay special attention to any infections or nerve disorders since these could indicate your cat’s diabetes is not well managed and the secondary issues could get worse quickly.
