Can You Clip Your Rat's Nails?

If you have a rat at home, you know just how sharp those little claws can be! When cat or dog nails get sharp, they get clipped. Can you clip your rat’s nails too?

You can definitely trim your rat’s nails! You just have to be very careful not to clip the quick. The quick is the pink part of the nail where all the blood vessels are. If you clip this area, it will bleed profusely, and it is very painful for your pet.

Check your pet’s nails every few weeks and use a regular pair of nail clippers. If you don’t want to clip your pet’s nails, consider letting him out to play on a hard surface that will wear down his nails naturally.

If you don’t want to trim your rat’s nails on your own, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian clinic Louisville, CO. For more information, please contact your Arapahoe Animal Hospital, CO.
