Anal Glands in Dogs

All dogs have anal glands. And although most dogs are able to empty their anal glands without any assistance, if your dog starts dragging his behind on the carpet, you may have to intervene.

Before you begin, make sure you have sturdy rubber gloves. You might also want to ask a friend, relative, or neighbor to hold your pup’s tail up as it’s much easier to complete this yucky task when you have help.

When you’re ready, place your pooch on a towel and hold his tail straight up in the air. Squeeze on either side of his anus, being ready to wipe up the mess. You may also want to have some doggy-safe wipes handy to help clean up anything that may ooze onto his fur.

If your dog’s anal glands aren’t a problem, your furry friend may have worms. Contact your animal hospital Anoka to schedule an appointment.
