Your cat is an adorable little creature, but her claws can really pack a punch when she wants them to. Why does she have them and how does she care for them?

Your pet’s claws are retractable so she can keep them safely tucked away when they aren’t in use. Her wild ancestors used them to defend themselves, but your pet is more likely going to use her claws to help her climb and to visibly mark her territory. Your pet scratches on things to let others know what areas she considers to be hers, but she also scratches to help maintain her claws. This helps keep her claws, which are always growing, filed to a manageable length and gives her a chance to remove portions that have seen better days. Does your Dalmatian love to play in the water and sand? If so, you may be looking for a dog friendly beach or waterfront where you and your dog can play and spend time outdoors on the water. Many area beaches allow for dogs to be on the beach at set times of the year. For instance, when beaches are less frequented in the water because of weather, the beach may be open to dogs on leash. Beaches that have visitors year round often set aside designated areas where dogs are allowed to play in the sand and water. These areas usually require the dog to be on leash. Owners must also pick up after their dogs to keep the beach clean. Check with local beach park officials to find out which beaches in your area allow dogs. Your Flint, MI veterinary clinic team may also know of beaches open to dogs. Learn more here.
