Did you know that Hepatic Lipidosis or fatty liver is a disease that occurs in a variety of birds including the Lorikeet, Quaker parrots, lovebirds, cockatoos, budgies, and cockatiels? Symptoms of fatty liver disease in birds including the Lorikeet may include a sudden loss of appetite, lethargy, and depression. If your parrot has any of these symptoms, call your vet immediately. Parrots that are overweight are prone to fatty liver due to additional storage of fat that occurs in the liver. A distended abdomen, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, abnormal droppings, and poor feather health may also occur. In addition, poor liver function can lead to problems in the central nervous system which may cause seizures, loss of balance or even muscle tremors.
