Kneading is a unique behavior of cats that can be quite flattering while also causing pain. Cats knead their mother’s breasts while they are kittens to stimulate milk so when your cat kneads you, she is communicating her love and devotion toward you. There are also scent glands in your cat’s feet so when she kneads you, she is marking you as part of her territory. All of this is in the name of love but doesn’t help you when experiencing the pain of claws digging into your lap. Don’t yell at your cat or punish her for kneading you. Keep her claws trimmed short to lessen the damage inflicted. And be prepared to slip a blanket or pillow between your cat’s kneading and your leg. Pet her while she is kneading you and talk to her softly to encourage this loving behavior. Contact your Bayside, NY vet to learn more.
