Cats can be trained to a certain degree; however, they may not be as easy to train as dogs. Training cats is often undertaken to change specific behavior to help ensure they will have a happy and healthy bond with their owners and other pets.

The first training that kittens are subjected to is using the litter box. This is not really difficult because it is in their nature to bury their waste. Here are steps to litter box training:

  • As soon as your new kitty arrives, place him in a room where a clean and uncovered litter box has been placed beforehand. There should also be food and water bowls positioned far from the litter box.
  • If your kitty eliminates outside the litter box, place his poop in the litter box. This may be necessary to encourage your kitty to start using the litter tray.

Guinea pigs are unable to climb or jump very high, so they won’t need an enclosure that is covered. When picking out an enclosure for your cavy, make sure the walls are at least 10 inches/25 inches tall so your pet won’t be able to get out.

To protect their delicate feet from injury, the floor of the enclosure should be made of solid plastic. Guinea pigs love being in a spacious enclosure so they will have enough space to run and engage in natural behaviors, such as digging. Most cavy cages available in stores are much too small. The minimum floor space recommended for a cavy is 10″x20″/25cm x 50cm.

Lots of bedding made from shredded paper should be provided. Shredded paper is recommended because it is the safest bedding for cavies. Make a habit of cleaning your pet’s cage and changing the bedding every day to keep a healthy environment. Bedding can ea ... Read more »

A new puppy means putting in extra effort into making your home environment safe and comfortable long before his arrival. Dogs love to stay indoors with the human members of the pack. It can be stressful for them to be separated from their owners for long periods. However, there are instances when it is not practical for a pet dog to live indoors, thus the owner should construct an outdoor home that will protect the dog from the environment elements.

During periods of extreme environmental temperatures, make sure your indoor or outdoor dog is comfortable. He may need a good source of heat to keep him warm and comfortable during cold winter days. As temperatures rise during summer, he may need to be brought inside the house to prevent him from heat stress or heat stroke.

Whether you are keeping a dog indoors or outdoors, his training should involve recognizing the line that separate ... Read more »

Scratching is a normal feline instinct. Cats need to scratch, and if they don’t find a scratching post to engage in their habit, they may find your furniture or carpet a good place to scratch.

This is a very important reason to buy and install a scratching post in your kitty’s play area. There are various brands and types to choose from and these tips will help you choose the right one for your kitty.

  • Since the post will be subjected to vigorous play, choose one that is sturdy and stable enough to remain upright despite the onslaught. Choose one with a rubber base so it will remain in place.
  • Cats love to stretch while they scratch on the post. Get one that will allow your pet to stretch his body when he is standing on his hind legs.
  • Most cats prefer vertical scratching posts over horizo ... Read more »

If you adopt a rabbit that has lived in a previous home then you might come across a few negative habits or behaviors that you will need to train out of your rabbit. If you need help identifying such behaviors or habits, just talk with your veterinary clinic Cambrian, CA staff for help. One example of a negative behavior is a rabbit’s anti-social behavior. If a rabbit is not handled, played with, and cared for consistently then he will learn to become standoffish and even learn to bight or nip when he comes in contact with humans. This is usually a learned behavior that results from a lack of bonding time with the previous owner. You can discourage this behavior in your rabbit by re-teaching him how to socialize or act around other people and even other animals. Spend time with your rabbit, groom him, play with him, and just be around him. Click here to know more.
