Many households items need batteries in order to function. Batteries that are commonly used include lithium discs, alkaline batteries, and rechargeable ones. But batteries are very toxic to pets and should be kept out of their reach. Batteries have harmful chemicals and may even give off an electric current that can cause damage or kill animal tissue. Alkaline batteries contain caustic or corrosive substances such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide which can cause tissue necrosis when it comes into contact with the skin of the animal.

Lithium disc batteries does not contain any of these corrosive compounds but when ingested, it can result in severe tissue damage along the esophagus and the rest of the gastrointestinal passage.
