Why you can Catch Your Dog Smelling Strange, Foreign Things

When we see a pile of dog feces on the ground, we react from the concept of seeing it, and possibly smelling it.

Dogs almost solely rely on their sense of smell for many things. Even if a dog sees something familiar, it will only truly recognize the object if it smells it.

Dogs are not hardwired to look at a pile of dog feces and say “Oh, that’s dog feces.” A dog is hardwired to actually have to go up and smell the dog feces before it knows properly what it is.

It’s an odd behaviour, all things considered, but this is the way dogs function, and it would be a huge benefit for you to remember this.
