What is Molting in Monk Parakeets?

Molting is a very common and natural occurring process in all kinds of birds including the Monk Parakeet. It is a time when the bird will undergo a process in which old feathers are replaced with new ones. Molting most often occurs at certain times of the year for birds based on their species and habitat. It generally coincides with the weather, migration, diet, and reproduction cycles. If you notice your Monk Parakeet is molting at an odd time of the year, call your vet and schedule an exam. Extreme molting or molting out of a season may be an indicator of an underlying illness. Your vet will need to examine your bird to determine this. Normal molting may be accompanied by less activity from your bird including less talking, singing, and moving about. This behavior is normal. However, if you’re concerned, give your vet Happy Valley, OR a call.
