9:21 PM Trimming Your Cat’s Nails |
You need to trim your cat’s nails regularly to keep her from causing injury if she accidently scratches you. She could also catch her nails on the carpet or drapes and injure her toes. Start trimming your cat’s nails when your cat is young so it becomes routine. Handle your cat’s feet and toes so she becomes accustomed to your touch. When you are ready to trim the nails, act quickly and efficiently. Press the footpad to extend the nails. Use a clipper made for cats and cut off a little at a time while avoiding the quick. The quick is the nerve and blood supply to the nail and will hurt and bleed if nicked. Cut as many as you can but don’t force your cat beyond her patience. Just stop and try another time and eventually you will get all the nails trimmed. For more information, contact your Garden City, NY veterinarian. |
