10:55 AM Trimming Your Cat's Nails |
You need to trim your cat’s nails regularly so she doesn’t catch them and injure her toes or inadvertently scratch you or your belongings. Start when you cat is young so nail trimming becomes routine. Handle her feet and nails to help her get accustomed to your touch. When you are ready to trim your cat’s nails, act efficiently. Grasp your cat’s foot and press on the pads to extend the nails. Use a pet nail trimmer and cut the nails a little at a time while avoiding the quick. The quick is the blood and nerve supply to the nail and will bleed and hurt if nicked. Continue one nail at a time as long as she will allow. If she resists, stop and try another day. Eventually you’ll have all the nails trimmed cleanly. The front nails will need more frequent trimming than the back one. For more information, contact your Saskatoon, Saskatchewan veterinarian.
