The Quirky Afghan Hound

The Afghan hound originated from Egypt. The breed has already been in existence for more than 4000 years. The breed was introduced in Europe during the early 1900s. Afghan hounds are also called Baluchi hound, Taxi, Balkh, Persian greyhound, or Barukhzy.

Being a sighthound, the Afghan, hunts by sight. Their extreme agility and speed helps them catch prey. They have also been used to tend to sheep, and also a hunting buddy for a variety of game. The breed’s natural abilities help them excel in sighting and hunting, tracking, lure coursing, and racing. They also make excellent watchdogs.

Afghan hounds have long been recognized as the ‘king of dogs’ because of the breed’s majestic and elegant bearing. They can reach a height of 24-29 inches, and can weigh upto 45-60 pounds. Their full haircoat needs regular grooming and attention. Brushing the hair coat should be avoided between baths because it can only damage the dry coat, paving the way for tangles and matting. A pin brush can be used to keep their coats in good condition.

While weekly baths may not really be necessary, they can help prevent the hair coat from matting. Wearing snoods during mealtime can help keep their ears from getting into their food and water bowls.
