Teaching Your Dog to Sit on Command

Teaching your dog to sit on command is a good start to obedience training. This gives you a way to get him under control quickly and is often the beginning position for a number of other commands. Start by getting down to your dog’s level. Hold a treat in front of his nose to get his attention. Raise the treat up and over your dog’s head so he needs to lower his rear end to keep following the treat. Say your dog’s name followed by the SIT command. As soon his rear end touches the floor, give him a treat and lots of praise. Practice this often and as your dog becomes more reliable, delay giving him a treat after the touchdown. Gradually start phasing out the treats so your dog learns to sit by your command alone. Be patient and use kindness throughout the training process.
