The eyes are very sensitive organs. In kittens, their eye tissues are still underdeveloped during birth, thus they are born with their eyes closed. Their eyes gradually open within a week or two after birth. Here are simple ways to protect your kitty’s eyes:

• Avoid applying shampoo near your pet’s eyes while giving him a bath. A tearless shampoo for pets can be used. You can also ask your vet for an ophthalmic ointment that you can apply to the cat’s eyes before bath time.
• When applying chemicals, such as insect repellents, make sure to keep your pet out of the house.
• Children should be taught not to poke the cat’s eye and to avoid using sticks or sharp objects when playing with pets.

Your kitten will benefit from a regular eye examination conducted by your Cy-Fair veterinarian. The earlier a problem is detected; the better will be the prognosis in most cases.
