Non-sporting dogs include a varied and interesting group of canines that don’t seem to fit well with the other recognized canine groups. These dogs cannot be classified based on a common physical characteristic, such as toy breeds; or purpose, like hunting dogs. Non-sporting dogs come in different sizes, appearance, and behavior. Some of the popular breeds under this group include the fun-loving Dalmatian, the cheerful Shiba Innu, the glamorous Chinese Sharpei, the aloof Chow Chow, the independent Lhasa Apso, the brawny Bulldog, and the majestic Poodle. Dalmatians are great with kids however they can be too boisterous for the very young. They need proper socialization while still puppies since they tend to be difficult if they have not undergone any early obedience training. The Shiba Innu is a great watch dog because the breed is generally vigilant and cautious. However, these dogs can be fairly stubborn and manipulative if they don’t receive adequate obedience training and a clear definition of who is in charge. Poodles, particularly the Standard Poodle, are highly intelligent and one of the best dog breeds to train. The strong-willed Shar Pei is a challenge to train. There is a need to put a tight rein on its aggressive tendencies at a young age.
