Managing a Fearful Dog

Some dogs are more shy and submissive than others. These dogs are cautious and may frighten easily. If your dog is fearful, it is important that you make him feel safe. If your dog is frightened, he may lash out aggressively. Start by providing lots of validation. Socialize your dog so he becomes accustomed to people and other dogs. However, never force your dog to do anything if heseems apprehensive. Over time your dog will become desensitized and less fearful. Act with confidence and do your best to not show fear for your dog and never act disappointed in him. He will sense your apprehension and act fearful himself. Obedience training can build confidence. Make it very clear what you expect your dog to do and what you don’t want him to do. Use treats and lots of praise to reward your dog as he succeeds. Never punish your fearful dog. Act with patience and kindness. For more information, contact your Flushing, NY veterinarian.
