How to Treat Insulinoma in Dalmatian Ferrets

Insulinoma is an eye illness that can occur in ferrets like the Dalmatian ferret. Symptoms may include lethargy, starring off into space, avoiding food, trouble using hind limbs, and even seizures. If your Dalmatian Ferret has been diagnosed with Insulinoma, talk with your vet about treatment, medications, and long-term care for your ferret. Insulinoma can often occur when the cells in the pancreas produce tumors or nodules that in turn cause an increase in insulin production or hypoglycemia. Your vet will need to run a blood test to measure your Dalmatian’s glucose levels. Your ferret should fast four to six hours prior to the test. If the test indicates low glucose levels then your vet will most likely recommend surgery to confirm the presence of tumors and to remove them. The procedure is called a partial Pancreatectomy. This can increase your Dalmatian’s survival rate and often requires no additional medication. Consult with your veterinary clinic Brookfield, WI for details.
