How to Diagnose DJD in American Shorthairs

Is your American Shorthair having trouble grooming? Does she appear to be having difficulty getting in and out of her litter box? If so, call your vet right away to set up an appointment. Cats are prone to have arthritis or inflammation of the joints as they age. American Shorthairs along with other breeds are especially prone to joint disorders including hip dysplasia, which can create a more server case of arthritis called Osteoarthritis or Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD). DJD is a long-term disease that occurs when the cartilage surrounding the muscle joints slowly deteriorates. This disease can only be diagnosed by your vet. A full assessment of past symptoms as well as a current physical exam will be required. The exam will typically reveal a decreased range of motion, stiffness in the legs, deformity in the joints, and swelling or pain in the joints. Contact your veterinary clinic North Phoenix, AZ for additional details.
