5:56 AM Heartworms and Your Dog |
Heartworms can make your dog very sick and if untreated, could kill him. Heartwormsare invasive parasites and their larvae can be transmitted to your dog if he isbitten by a mosquito that bit an infected dog. Thelarvae grows and mature and then clogs blood vessels, the lungs and the heart.A heartworm infestation may be treatable but treatment is expensive, may require surgery, and may not restore your dog’s health. Fortunately, heartworm prevention medication is available by prescription. Give your dog this medication monthly, all year round since just a few warm days can cause mosquitoes to become active. Choose a day of the month that you will remember so you consistently give your dog his medication such as the first day or day 15. Your dog will need periodic blood tests to ensure he hasn’t inadvertently been infected with heartworm larvae. For more information, contact your Marietta, GA veterinarian, or visit their profile. |
