Feline Leukemia and Your Cat

The Feline Leukemia virus (FeLV) is a virus that causes problems with your cat’s immune system and make her susceptible to disease. FeLV is transmitted from cat to cat through bodily fluids, most often from grooming or fighting. Kittens can get the virus through their mother’s milk. Once your cat has the virus, it cannot be cured and will most likely shorten her lifespan significantly. You can care for any illnesses and infections but most importantly, you must keep your cat from infected other cats. This includes keeping your infected cat inside the house at all times. The safest thing for your cat is to get her vaccinated against FeLV to keep her from acquiring the virus in the first place. Keep up on her booster shots throughout her life and get a blood test regularly to make sure she wasn’t inadvertently infected. Contact your Coon Rapids, MN vet to learn more.
