11:22 PM Digging Problems in Dogs |
Some dogs are notorious for digging, destroying well-manicured lawns, and even making a tunnel under the fence and escaping. Here are some valuable tips that you can use to get rid of your dog’s digging behavior: • Take advantage of your pet’s voracious appetite. You will surely get your dog’s attention when you display his favorite treat. He knows it will be his for the taking if he will do what you want. It is best to use his favorite treat during training so that your dog will listen and respond positively. • Your pet will continually seek for praise and attention from you. It is always his desire to please the alpha leader and the other members of the pack. Always lavish your pet with praise to show him that you are happy with his behavior. • If you’re out leash-walking with your dog, try to gently steer him away from the area where he loves to dig. This action should be done as gently as possible to avoid harming your dog or creating a negative association to his collar and leash. • If you can’t stop your pet from digging, you can choose a specific area in your yard where your dog can dig as often as he wants. If you can’t spare the space, try filling a box with lots of sand. However, you will still need to keep watch until your pet will realize that he is only allowed to dig only in that specific area. If you will catch him digging outside the designated area, be sure to correct him immediately so that he will realize what he is doing wrong.
