Diagnosing Fatty Liver Disease in the American Singer Canary

Fatty liver disease is common in a variety of birds including the American Singer Canary. If you notice your canary is not behaving normally or appears sick, contact your vet to request an exam. Your bird may be unwell. For illnesses such as fatty liver disease symptoms such as lack of appetite, lethargy, or even depression are common. Fatty liver disease occurs when large amounts of fat are deposited in the liver. Parrots and birds that are obese often have enlarged livers due to the additional fat stored there. The sooner the disease is diagnosed and treated the higher the chances of survival. Your vet will need to run a complete physical examination to make a diagnosis. The palpitation of an enlarged liver is usually an indicator of fatty liver disease.
