Dental Care of Lagomorphs and Rodents

Lagomorphs such as rabbits, and rodents such as guinea pigs and chinchillas, benefit much from dental and oral care. For herbivorous lagomorphs and rodents, a diet that consists of tough fibrous roughage will give them something to chew on and keep their teeth’s growth in check. A diet that does not require much chewing will result in uneven surface of the cheek teeth causing spikes of enamel to grow on the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth. These spikes can be extremely painful and often result in excessive salivation, incapable of closing the mouth, reluctance to chew, and consequently reduced food intake.

Since there are relatively limited procedures and treatments for dental disorders in lagomorphs and rodents, prevention is still the best way to go. There should be regular examination of your pet’s teeth for abnormalities. A balanced diet is also important in enriching your pet’s diet. If you see abnormal growth in your pet’s mouth, or shows pain when you touch the area near his mouth or head, make sure to contact your vet Highland.  Click here to find out more.
