Whether you decide to keep your guinea pigs outdoors or indoors, they will need a spacious shelter and exercise area (run). The enclosure must be strong and secure, well-ventilated, and protect your pets from all types of weather extremes.

The enclosure should have adequate space for your guinea pigs to rest or hide when they are overwhelmed by their surroundings. The area should be large enough to allow your pets to rest together, lie down, stretch out, and bond. It must be placed on higher ground to keep the floor dry. Being a little elevated means having better ventilation. The base of the shelter is covered with a thick layer of old newspaper, dust-free wood flakes, or paper-based litter. Placing plenty of hay in the bedroom areas is also a good idea to make the spot more comfortable for your pets.
