3:33 PM Cats and Hyperthyroidism |
Hyperthyroidism is caused by an excess of thyroid hormone and is prevalent in older cats. This disorder can cause your cat to lose weight and have trouble regulating her body temperature. She may experience excessive thirst and urination, some panting and hyperactivity. She may look unkempt and clearly doesn’t seem to be feeling well. Hyperthyroidism can be diagnosed easily with blood and urine testing so treatment can be started quickly. Treatment often relies on oral medication given daily. You may also give your cat this medication by rubbing it in gel form into the inside of her ears. You will need to give your cat these medications for the rest of her life. Surgical removal of the thyroid is also an option as is injection of radioactive iodine to manage thyroid hormones. The symptoms of hyperthyroidism can mimic a number of other conditions so make an appointment with your Gresham, OR vet for evaluation and treatment recommendations. |
