Cataracts in Quaker Parrots

Did you know that pet birds like Quaker parrots can be prone to a variety of eye issues including cataracts? If you suspect your pet bird has developed cataracts call your vet to set up a routine exam. Your vet can tell you that a cataract may cause an increase in the density of the cloudiness in the lens of the bird’s eye. It often creates whiteness or a bluish color that is visible in the pupil. If your bird develops a cataract in one eye he will most likely develop a cataract in the other eye. In general, cataracts can be genetic or caused by malnutrition, trauma, diabetes, infections or even inflammatory issues. Cataracts are typical in canaries, but not in Amazons, African Greys and Macaws. Treatment for the cataract may include surgery depending on the bird’s size.
