1:54 PM Caring For Short-Tailed Opossums (Monodelphis domestica) |
Short-tailed opossums are now becoming popular household pets. In order to meet their basic needs adequately on a daily basis, pet owners should try to learn as much as they can about these short-tailed marsupials. They differ from most marsupials because they do not have any pouch where their immature offspring stay until they develop to full term. Instead of being inside a pouch, the immature offspring attach to the mother’s nipple and continue to latch on until they can wean themselves from their mother’s milk. They are nocturnal animals which mean they are most active at night, and spend most of the day sleeping. To make them more tolerant of human interaction, opossums should get used to being handled while they are still very young. Opossums need to be housed in separate enclosures to prevent them from fighting. Pet opossums can be housed in a 15-20 gallon fish tank. A layer of corn cob shavings on the tank’s floor can help keep the cage free from moisture and odor. Encourage your pet to engage in natural behavior by creating lots of opportunities for nesting, playing, climbing, etc. Don’t hesitate to call your Cameron Park, CA veterinarian if you have any concerns or issues regarding your pet.
