8:45 AM Can My Horse Overheat While Riding? |
Yes, your horse can overheat while you are riding him. This can happen for numerous reasons. For instance, if it’s humid out as this can make it more difficult for your horse to breathe while exercising. If you bring your horse in to ride and you notice he’s already breathing rapidly and appears sweaty then you should probably skip riding. Instead, spray him down with cool water, offer him fresh water to drink and even keep him indoors out of the sun for a time. If your horse is fine while tacking up, but starts to walk slow during the ride and breathe heavily then you may need to keep the ride short as the outside temperatures are too much for your horse to work. After a ride on a hot day, shower your horse off and give him some time indoors to recover before turning him out. Talk with your veterinarian Mattoon, IL for more tips. |
