Biting In Dogs

Dogs can, and do, bite. But the good news is, the number of aggressive dogs is really very few. Most dogs bite because they are afraid, or they think you are prey.

When meeting a new dog, always exercise caution by slowly approaching the dog and its owner. Before petting the animal, you should ask the permission of the owner. If it’s okay, slowly extend your hand to allow the dog to sniff the back of the hand. Pet the dog on its shoulder or chest, NOT the head.

When a dog is approaching, don’t run. Instead, stand like a tree with your arms by your sides. Avoid looking the dog straight in the eyes. If it tries to attack you, place an object (such as your bag or jacket) between you and the dog. Make sure the object is not attached to you. If you are knocked down, curl up in a ball, and cover your ears while remaining quiet.

Regular visits to your Arlington, TX veterinary clinic will help ensure your pet’s health and wellbeing. There’s more pet care info on this website.
