Aggression Between Cats

Cats are extremely territorial creatures and often engage in aggressive behavior to defend their established territory. The arrival of a new cat may seem like a threat to the resident cat so don’t expect that they will be playing sweet music sometime soon.

It will need time, effort, and patience to get your two cats to get along or at least tolerate each other. Proper introduction is very important to increase the chances of cats getting along or even having a truce in the household.

Here are ways to help get your cats’ relationship off to a good start:

  • Make sure they are spayed or neutered to prevent hormone-fueled behaviors such as dominance, being very territorial, going into heat, etc.
  • Place the new cat in a room that has been cat-proofed beforehand. Always close the door to prevent other cats or dogs from entering; however, they can smell one another through the room’s door.
  • Let your pets get used to each other’s scent by exchanging beddings or toys.
  • After a few days, you can introduce the new cat to the resident cat by installing a durable baby gate at least 36 inches high in the doorway. Be quick to praise and reward them if they don’t snarl or try to attack each other.

You should seek professional help from a Crown Point, IN vet if you are dealing with any aggressive behavior exhibited by your pet.  Click here for more information.
