With their extremely sensitive sense of smell, cats turn their backs on food that has gone spoiled. Stale food has an undesirable odor that many cats hate. Also, spoiled food may contain harmful microorganisms that can cause disease.
Canned cat food can easily get spoiled especially when it is not stored in the refrigerator once it is opened. Under normal room temperature, canned food should never be out of the fridge for more than 20 minutes. This is true during summer when you don’t have air conditioning, and during winter when the heater is turned on.
Once you have opened a can of cat food, get just enough of the cat food, and transfer the remaining canned food into clean containers and stored in the refrigerator. It is recommended that smaller meals be given at regular intervals throughout the day.
