Type One and Type Two Diabetes in the Balinese Cat

Did you know that diabetes can affect both dogs and cats in much the same way the disease affects people? If you own a cat like the Balinese then you may want to talk with your vet about feline diabetes and how to recognize signs and symptoms in your cat. In general, four classic symptoms of diabetes include an increase in appetite, weight loss, increased urination, and increased water consumption. Diabetes is also known to occur in two types which are insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).  Diabetes in cats can be treated with insulin injections or oral medications. Diet changes and increased exercise may also be used to help treat the disease. Diabetes most often occurs in older, obese cats and is commonly seen in males more often than females. If your cat has been diagnosed with diabetes, talk with your veterinarian Omaha, NE about treatment options and long term care. Learn more here.
