Hugging is one way that we show affection. Because we so often hug our friends and family, we may be tempted to give our pet a squeeze too! Is it okay to hug your cat?

You can hug your cat, but be very careful. Felines don’t show affection the same way we do. That means they don’t give out hugs. If you squeeze a little too tightly, or keep your cat in an embrace for a little too long, he is likely to make it clear that he doesn’t like it. Let him go as soon as his ears prick back, he growls, or he starts squirming.

It’s best to refrain from hugging your cat altogether. Instead, find a different way to show your cat that you care. Petting him is one option, but you can also play with him and provide him with treats to show him some love.

Your dog needs a leash to help keep him safe when you are out of the house. However, there are a lot of different leash options and some will better suit your pet’s needs than others.

To narrow down your options, take the time to consider the length of leash that would be ideal. This will depend on your pet’s training level and where you plan on walking him. Next, look at your pet’s size. You will want him to be comfortable wearing the leash, so make sure that it is an appropriate weight and thickness for him. Consider where you plan on hooking it to – a collar or harness- and make sure this fits securely with the option you’ve chosen. Also, consider other features like reflective areas, quick-drying materials, and durability. Your local Aurora, CO vet clinic can offer additional advice. Visit their company page for details.

Did you know that certain canine breeds like the Boxer may develop a skin defect known as a dermoid sinus skin defect? These defects generally show up along the back, the neck or upper spine of the dog. This is typically a treatable and controllable defect. In some dogs there are no outward signs while in others there is a protrusion of hair along the back and a tube or cord can be felt below the skin. If the skin secretes a discharge, it must be cleansed and treated regularly to avoid infection or possible abscess growth. If the sinus becomes infected it is suggested that it be surgically removed. In some cases, the sinus or skin defect can attach itself to the lining of the spinal cord and cause neurological symptoms. Treatment in this case is aggressive surgical removal. Food that has gone bad and even molded can produce dangerous toxins like tremorgenic mycotoxins. If ingested, these toxins could make your Ragdoll go into excessive body tremors or even convulsions. The toxins are often fatal. If your Ragdoll eats molded food call your vet immediately. Even if it’s just a little bit, call your vet to make sure your cat doesn’t need treatment. If you’re concerned about your American Shorthair’s weight then you should give your vet a call and take her in for an exam. Your vet can weigh your cat and tell you if the cat’s weight is on average, below average or above average. Keeping a journal of what your cat eats for meals and snacks as well as the amount of exercise your cat receives can also help determine areas that need improvement for your cat’s health. You can also check your cat’s weight at home by weighing her on a scale. In addition, your vet make recommend a quick home check where if you can easily see or feel your cat’s rib bones then she is too then. If you feel a layer of fat covering the rib bones then she may be overweight. This is not to be used as a professional analysis, however. Always call your veterinarian Columbia, MD for professional advice.
