Can You Prevent Mouth Rot in Monitor Lizards?

In many cases, yes, moth rot is preventable in Monitor lizards when it is primarily caused by poor diet, stress or inadequate living environments.  In general, mouth rot develops as a result of the immune system being compromised and unable to fight off the bacteria that often develops in the mouth. The bacteria can eventually cause an infection which leads to the mouth sores in the mouth and on the lips. White mucus or pus can also build up in the mouth as a result as well. When the primary cause of mouth rot is related to living conditions, you can help treat it and even prevent it from reoccurring. Simply learning how to provide the right living environment with the right temperature and diet can keep your lizard healthy and happy.
