While the disease is more common in some breeds more than others, it can strike any breed including the Bengal. Feline diabetes typically occurs when a cat’s body doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use the insulin correctly. Insulin is a hormone that is produced in a cat’s pancreas and is in charge of regulating the flow of glucose from the bloodstream into the body’s cells. When there isn’t enough insulin then the cat’s body starts breaking down fat and protein as alternative energy sources. An exact cause for feline diabetes is not known. However, various hormonal diseases such as obesity, chronic pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, Cushing’s disease and acromegaly have been linked to feline diabetes. Give your veterinary clinic Columbia, MD a call to learn more about fel ... Read more »

Did you know that Siberian cats can be prone to epileptic seizures? If your Siberian cat has been diagnosed with epilepsy talk with your vet to learn about treatment, medications and long-term care. Feline epilepsy occurs when a cat is overcome with sudden or periodic seizures. Like human seizures, feline seizures are believed to be related to the miscommunication of neurons in the cerebrum of the brain. The cause for these miscommunications; however, is unknown. Once your vet has diagnosed your cat’s epilepsy through a variety of tests and scans, he will be able to prescribe a treatment plan. For instance, if an underlying cause is determined then the cause will be treated. It is important to note that treatment for epilepsy is not a cure. Treatment is given in hopes of decreasing the frequency and severity of seizures. Medications used to do this will be prescribed by your vet Ellicott, MD. See details here. ... Read more »

Dogs like the Yorkshire Terrier that have been diagnosed with bloat should have treatment immediately to relieve pressure and pain. Bloat is a dangerous condition that is often fatal without immediate veterinarian intervention. It happens when large amounts of air or fluid forms in the stomach causing the stomach to swell. The swelling often blocks the veins from sending blood to vital organs causing low blood pressure, shock or organ damage. Immediate treatment may start with your vet inserting a tube into your Griffon’s mouth and down to the stomach to release built up pressure in the stomach area. If the stomach is twisted, a large hallow needle will be placed into the stomach to relieve pressure. Surgery may be required to untwist the stomach. If you suspect your Griffon is suffering from bloat seek immediate treatment. For more information about bloat, please contact your veterinarian Ellicott, MD.

Have you ever wondered if a flea collar would work for your Birman cat? Flea collars are just one of the options for treating your feline for fleas. Talk to your vet to find out if your Birman is a candidate for a flea collar. Flea collars are simple to use and last anywhere between 3 to 8 months. Your vet can help you find a flea collar that’s right for your cat including what brand, size, and type of flea collar to buy. Don’t forget to check if you can use the flea collar in addition to a prevention program. In general, the flea collar releases a defense mechanism on the neck and shoulder area of your cat. This drives the fleas to the tail where they die and fall off. The latest flea collars now protect the cat’s entire body. For more details, call your vet Ellicott City, MD.
