Your guinea pig is very active within the confines of her cage, and she loves interacting with you regularly. This makes you wonder – does she really need floor time with you?

While your pet may love running around her enclosure, this isn’t a substitute for regular exercise in an unconfined space. Floor time is an absolute necessity in order to keep your pet in shape. Her wild counterparts get a ton of exercise, and it’s important to offer this to her each and every day. It also gives her an opportunity to get a change of scenery, and to bond with you more easily. There are a lot of games that can’t be played without this open space, and your pet will miss out on these opportunities without regularly taking part in floor time. Your local Omaha NE veterinarian can offer additional guidance.

Your pet is a part of your family, and you want to make sure you are able to care for him regardless of what happens. However, this can be difficult if your pet becomes separated from you. How can you help keep her safe under these conditions?

Microchipping your pet offers you the opportunity to have your pet returned to you should she ever find herself far from home. A microchip is inserted under the skin, so it can’t be lost or removed like a collar and identifications tags can be. This chip can be scanned at many veterinarian offices and animal shelters to bring up your contact information. This alerts people to where she should be, and allows them to call you so you can know she is safe and then retrieve her. For additional information, please contact your local Omaha NE vet.

You’ve had your pet for a while now, and a few different people have talked about microchipping with you. However, you aren’t sure that it’s right for your pet. What are the benefits of having this chip implanted just under the skin of your pet’s back?

Placing the microchip is a small part of the process, and once there your pet won’t even be able to feel it in place. The security and peace of mind it offers are second to none. In fact, many pets who become separated from their family are only returned due to their microchip being scanned. It retains your information, which can be updated anytime it changes, and allows someone to contact you regarding your pets whereabouts regardless how and where he happens to be found. For additional information, please contact your local Chico Creek Animal Hospital.

It’s easy to spoil your cat because it’s so easy to bring him home a new toy every time you head to the store. The question is, should you?

There’s nothing wrong with bringing home a new toy for your cat every time you visit the pet store, but those toys can be very expensive. Because cats are so picky, your pet may decide not to play with his new toy anyway!

Instead, try rotating the toys that your cat already has. If a toy disappears in a drawer for a while and then reappears, your cat will think it’s brand new!

You can also try making a toy for your cat at home. Wand toys can be made out of sticks and ribbon. Even a crumpled up piece of paper can be a lot of fun for a cat!

Some cats become anxious when it’s time to go to the vet. This can be caused by fear of the cat carrier or the car ride and even your behavior at the vet. Get your cat used to her carrier. Let your cat explore the carrier with the door open. Put in a few toys and treats and maybe a favorite blanket. Practice closing the door for a few seconds at a time. Once your cat is okay with the carrier, take your cat outside in the carrier and put it in the car. Follow your cat’s lead and when she is comfortable take a few short drives for practice. On the vet appointment day, encourage your cat into the carrier and just drive to the vet. Don’t make a big deal of it or try to comfort her otherwise you will reinforce her fear. Contact your San Jose, CA vet to learn more.

Designer dogs are a combination of breeds but they are different from mutts. Mutts come from a combination of breeds of questionable ancestry. There is little way to know the eventual size, look or temperament of these dogs. However, with the mix of breeds, the mutt is not as susceptible to the genetic issues of any one breed. A designer dog is a combination of two purebred dogs. The characteristics of each breed is well documented. You can rely on these breed combinations to a certain extent but not with absolute certainty. Your designer dog can lean more toward one of the breeding partners than the other. Thus before adopting a designer dog, check that the characteristics of both breeding partners will work will in your household. The larger gene pool can give you a bit more protection from genetic anomalies than with purebred dogs. Learn more from your San Jose, CA veterinary clinic.

Rats are actually pretty intelligent little critters. That means you can teach your pet tricks! Some of those tricks can make caring for him easier.

Tired of reaching your hand into the cage to grab your rat every single time you want to take him out of the cage. Try teaching him a verbal cue that shows him it’s time to come out of the cage. Rats can even learn their names, and that might be all it takes to get him out of hiding.

Rats like to climb, so it’s fairly easy to train your rat to climb up your arm when it’s time to come out of the cage, and back down again when it’s time for him to return home.

Litter training can make cleaning the cage easier! For more trick ideas, plan a visit with your pet clinic Orangevale, CA.

Planning a trip with your rabbit? Whether you’re heading to the vet or you’re moving to a new house across town, it’s important to consider where you put your rabbit’s cage while he’s in the car.

If your car is big enough, leave your rabbit in his cage and place him in the trunk or backseat. You may also be able to weasel the cage in the front seat.

If the cage is a little too big, you can use a carrier instead. In this case, you should keep the carrier in the front or backseat so you can keep an eye on your furry friend.

If your rabbit seems a bit unsettled, try draping a towel over the cage or carrier. For more tips on keeping your pet comfortable in the car, call your veterinary clinic Indianapolis, IN.
